Approaching 50 years of sheet metal fabrication in Oldham

Constant Manufacturing has come far since our start manufacturing Aluminium and Stainless Steel Kickplates where today we now boast a 50,000ft2  factory and over 70 members of staff. To this day we still manufacture and distribute Kickplates through our brand Constant Engineering alongside our precision sheet metal fabrication services through Constant Manufacturing.

Next year marks our official 50th Birthday, so we thought it was time to have a little look back on some key developments in recent years as sheet metal fabricators, from our suite of machines and services, as well as some of the popular projects we’ve documented in our case studies.

The concept of Constant Aluminum Supplies Ltd (our name at the time) was established in 1970 with Harry and Richard Garlick, Father and Son. And our first products were simple metal ironmongery products that were cut on hand-machines and folded on mechanical folding machines.

Over the years as the Garlick family grew, as did the business. In 1997 we purchased our first CNC Punching machine a TRUMPF 200R, followed by another 2 years later. At this stage of the business we used these machines exclusively for our own products. In 2005 we moved from our original Greenhalgh Street site in Failsworth, Manchester to our new site acquiring a 9,000 square foot purpose built unit on the border of Manchester / Oldham.

We moved 1 of the Trumpf 200R machines to the new site and traded the other machine against a fully automated punching machine the TRUMPF TruPunch 5000. Along with repositioning 2 of our existing press brakes we added another new press brake the Trumpf Trumabend 5130. At this point, the company diversified and started to offer manufacturing capability on a subcontract basis.

The company grew and in the next 2 years we installed a conveyorised paint plant and by 2012 we were buying the adjoining building from our neighbour to increase our manufacturing space by another 9,000 square foot. In 2012 we put in our first laser cutting machine with automation a TRUMPF 3030. Since then the company has gone from strength to strength. In 2013 we added our Trumpf TruPunch 3000 another automated CNC Punching machine. 

From there we grew organically and now boast 2 more buildings with custom offices, a dedicated fabrication unit,  a ByStronic Fibre Laser Cutter, 5 seats of Solidworks, 4 seats of RADAN and several ByStronic Press Brake machines.

We’ve never forgotten our routes, as we still have several hand sheet metal guillotines, fly presses and drills, which complement our large automated machines. We find the balance of hand and CNC machines gives us flexibility in projects we undertake.

With our long-standing lineage in Oldham, Greater Manchester, we were featured in 2016 in the updated ‘Oldham Book’, which looked through the years of businesses in the area just like us as subcontractors, specialising in precision sheet metal fabrication.
